The Nordic Runes are a source for me to feel my way through confusion, pain, indecision, and bewilderment, and even fevers. I don’t look for answers. I seek transformation through the kinetic experience of letting the rune and rune reading enter my body on a cellular level.I am usually in an extreme state of agitation or perhaps exhilaration. Once i was sick with a wicked bronchitis and fever, Christmas Day cooking a turkey and oatmeal cookies, a bit hammered on Codeine syrup and iced Ouzo.
I lay out the stones, and pace around my studio with music playing and probably a glass of red wine or something in my hand. Then I paint my way through the body sensations as i ruminate on the message. I don’t plan anything about what i am going to paint, other than a color selection for the page of mural in front of me.
I know when i am done because i stop feeling the urge to jab or stroke or dab or squiggle; then i move on to the next rune. It goes rather fast. I think I painted this wall mural in two or three spurts over three evenings in January of 2010, up on scaffolds and such.
Sadly I painted these on a wall of a studio I was having huge conflicts with the building owners; floods and the like. I had to move out a few months later and the s.o.b.’s of course painted over the mural. and of course i cried and screamed and hugged Sowelu and Teiwaz and Isa. I was heart broken. But transformed. I suppose if I owned a chainsaw and a pickup truck , and a Chinatown hideaway, I would have just sawed the sheet rock dismembered the wall and hauled it away. Instead a good friend Barry a photographer and painter, shot images for me to save the paintings in sections. I would like to print them on silk.
I do see a few themes that show up quite often in my paintings; mythology symbology in threes, like hash tags, ovum, and such. Sometimes words pop into my head that expand the purpose of the rune reading for me, or illuminate a core experience.
Well, thanks for reading. I hope to create public Rune Graffiti and have places where others can walk into the experience. I would like to paint YOU and your messages on your walls.
I have to make a comment since I am well veresd in Rune as well as Hieroglyphs These are not Nordic Runes. It does not mean they were not used by some Norseman. These are more Elder Futhark. I have listed more information on this below.Elder Futhark is thought to be the oldest version of the Runic alphabet, and was used in the parts of Europe which were home to Germanic peoples, including Scandinavia. Other versions probably developed from it. The names of the letters are shown in Common Germanic, the reconstructed ancestor of all Germanic languages.
Thank yosomuch for your reply! I must admit I have more research to do and I am excited sbout reading your references! I have been referencing only a few sources, which may be more poetic than scholarly. I am typing on mu phone at the moment so I cannot reply in depth. (typos too I suspect) I will get back to you and tell you what i was referencing when I was painting. For me , i would like to have a deeper knowledge of the root of the runes, so that I do not mis-speak. However , my more relevant purpose is accessing divination. That is something I have been fortunate to have an intuition with in different modalities, suxh as I Ching. Bye for now and thanks agsin for writing ad for finding my site.
